An entertainment and learning project exploring crime, investigation and the history of forensic science. Quizzes, personality tests, interactive scenes, cases and stories — all within Telegram.
How do you interpret a footprint? Can you trust a witness? Which methods helped detectives solve cases in the past — and where did they go wrong?
Pennybloods introduces real historical facts through gameplay. Players examine clues, compare witness accounts, test theories and discover the reasoning behind each answer.
The history of forensic science provides the material; curiosity drives the investigation. No specialist knowledge or separate app download is needed.
From Reader
to Detective
Pennybloods is a transmedia project spanning two formats: a public Telegram channel and a mini app.
Each stands on its own while inviting players to explore the other: from a historical story to an investigation, from an in-game mystery to the documents behind it.
Game Formats
Different formats offer different ways to play — from a quick question to a full investigation.
Knowledge Quiz
Test your knowledge, separate fact from myth and discover the explanation behind each answer.
Personality Test
Explore your preferences and find your place in the world of Pennybloods.
Crime Scene
Examine the scene and piece together what happened from the details.
Case
Work through a multi-stage investigation, connecting clues and witness accounts.
Story
Follow a narrative through a sequence of episodes and interactive challenges.
I chose to develop the project in public: releasing a playable first version, then expanding it over time. New cases, mechanics and features arrive gradually, while player feedback helps shape priorities and improve the experience. The project grows through an ongoing conversation with its audience.
From Archives to Playable Stories
I want the game world to be grounded in real history. My research draws on archival sources: old maps, photographs, police forms, newspapers and forensic manuals. They help me understand everyday life, the information available to investigators and the methods they used.
These discoveries shape the stories, visual design and gameplay. The layout of a fingerprint card, a detail in a photograph or a symbol on a map can inspire an investigative mechanic. When adapting sources for play, I preserve the historical details that matter.
Business
Model
Pennybloods follows a freemium model. Some games are free, while additional games and materials are available through a Tribute subscription to the private Theatre of Evidence channel.
Free content gives players a way to discover the project and its approach to gameplay. A subscription provides access to more content while supporting the development of new investigations.
The in-game economy revolves around shillings. Players earn this currency through designated activities and spend it in the Curiosity Shop, connecting gameplay with collecting items and customising their detective’s study.
Subscriptions fund the project; the in-game economy provides rewards and goals to work towards.
