Augmented Reality Card Game, 2023
Monstro
A two-player duel game that merges physical cards with augmented reality. The project explores hybrid gameplay, where physical action and digital response operate as a single system.
Game System
• 10 cards (5 per player)
• each card functions as an AR marker
• 5 rounds
• simultaneous card reveal

When viewed through a smartphone camera, each card reveals an animated monster (one of five species).

When two cards are placed next to each other, the system detects both markers and triggers an interaction:

• identical species form an alliance or result in a draw;
• a stronger species defeats a weaker one;
• each win awards 1 point.

After five rounds, the player with the highest score wins.
The gameplay centers on simultaneous decision-making, anticipation, and a clear dominance hierarchy that remains intuitive while sustaining tension.
AR as a Play Environment
Augmented reality functions not as a visual embellishment but as a rule-processing layer.

• Decisions are made in physical space;
• Outcomes are resolved in the digital layer;
• Gameplay emerges through the spatial alignment of cards.

The project operates within the framework of hybrid play: tangible objects and computational logic form a unified system. The smartphone camera becomes a mediator, translating physical proximity into animated conflict.
Visual Direction
The monster design was inspired by the work of Japanese ceramist Tamoya Sakai. His sculptures served as a starting point for creating creatures that feel both fantastical and tactile.
